UP UP AND INVEIGH

Writer's picture: Mack JamesMack James

Here’s another good word: inveigh. I can’t remember ever using it until now.

After inveighing against the passing of towns (and people) without giving them notice, we did it anyway in Kenora. Our bad. I guess it was a long day, the stars didn’t line up, or whatever. We did walk around the waterfront there (beautiful), but didn’t stay long. They have a performance venue in their waterfront park, which was deserted save for a few unfortunate souls, one of whom was yelling at the top of his voice in sermonic style. Lotta f bombs. Last time I was there we heard a concert by an outfit called the Fairlanes, a throwback group who arrived in a 56 Ford Fairlane convertible. It was a cheery time then, but not this time. An off night, I guess.

Then we slept in a Walmart parking lot. That’s standard practice in the RV world, but I don’t enjoy it. We did it in Brandon Manitoba, which was ok because we took a bike ride around the Assiniboine River and environs, but in Kenora we didn’t sleep well at all. Hard to feel secure on a Walmart parking lot.

Anyway, we drove to Thunder Bay next day, our longest so far at 500 km. I used to drive double that all day every day, but now it seems like a long way. We stopped and cooked breakfast along the way, with Mennonite sausage from Winkler. The best. Which is probably why 500 k seems like such a long day. You just wanna stop and go to the fridge. And the bathroom. And the couch. Maybe even the bed.

And then Thunder Bay. We got a good campground here…barely enough space for our moho among the trees. Set up, toured around Thunder Bay, and then today we went to a Snowbirds show on the Thunder Bay waterfront. As cheerful as Kenora was cheerless. There was a kite festival, a Snowbirds performance, a park full of people and food trucks and music. Pretty fine. I chatted up a young security guy, from whom I learned some local lore.

This afternoon it thundered and rained some, so we stayed at home among the pines and read books. I am reading Spare. Don’t judge me; at least I’m reading something.

Tomorrow it is off to see an amethyst mine (by royal decree) and then on to Wawa Ontario. I remember that place because they have a big statue on the road there, I think of a Canada Goose. I could look it up but so can you.

Not to be too travelogue-ish, which I have formerly inveighed against, but having a great time. Happy to be doing this. But this ain’t the only way to have a great time. I do believe that we can all have a great time, any day, any way, if we have a mind to. Maybe that’s just Polyanna talking, but I think it might be true.

Take care. Thanks for reading.

Another very enjoyable read! Happy to not be sleeping in a Walmart parking lot or Kenora! Who would have thought Thunder Bay was the happening place! And don’t tell anyone but we just finished Spare…

Hi Jan

Lotta good stuff going on for us, and I hope the same for you. Good stuff all over the place if you have eyes to see...at least I think that's true. And Spare....I haven't finished it yet but it is interesting. Even inspiring at some points.

If you haven't been to Manitoulin, well...it's a pretty fine place but not the only one on the earth. Maybe if you're driving by one fine day. Meanwhile there's Tofino, and Dallas Road, and and and...

Take care

Jim
