TREES ROCKS LAKES BUGS

Writer's picture: Mack JamesMack James

For those winers craving visuals, here they are. The first is of moi gazing out over Algonquin Park. It could be anywhere in Ontario; North of Lake Superior, Manitoulin Island, or elsewhere in the millions of square miles here. As I was saying, trees, rocks, lakes..... Actually, there are many beautiful sights to see in Ontario as well, but ya gotta know where to look. If you don't, this is pretty much it.

The second visual is proof that mosquitos in Quebec are nasty. Here you see the back and neck of our supervisor after a half hour or so outdoors. The bugs were bothering her some, but when I saw this I was horrified. This is actually after we cleaned the blood off. With the proper applications of salves and potions it isn't quite so bad today, but it is pretty lumpy. Midges. Small black flies. Didn't take any pictures of them because they're hard to see, but what they leave behind is not hard to see. It was bad enough that I checked to see where the local hospital was before we went to bed. Needn't have worried, though. She was still here in the morning.

In other news, we got a new fuel pump for the generator in Montreal, sat in Ste Anne Beaupre, which is the most impressive building I have ever been in, and got seriously rained on last night in Fereol des Neiges Quebec. Found out we have a leak in the bedroom slide.

Today our youngest son and his wife are showing up here. He is running a hundred mile race in these parts, known as Mega Trails, which we are here to watch. Starts at six in the evening, ends the next afternoon. I have no idea how people do that. In the mountains, in the dark. Unbelievable.

My one bit of wisdom gleaned in the last bit: Don't drive in Montreal if you don't have to. Quebec City either. Or don't do it in a ponderous, swaying motorhome. Bad for your nerves. I got honked at severely once (my fault), and flipped the bird once, by a young woman who thought that I, on the main freeway, should slow down to let her merge in her Kia. Not my fault.

But, let me say, the vast majority of people we meet in Quebec are cordial, especially rural Quebec. I like it here.

Do not flip the bird when merging. It's hurtful.
