You have not heard of Lumsden, I’m guessing. Nor had most people until some tourist website publicized it. Now it is famous enough to get on the CBC, and famous enough for us to be here. The selling point: beaches.
Beaches, it seems, are associated with Maui, and Tofino, and Rio De Janeiro, but Newfoundland? Well, maybe not. But I’m here to tell you, Lumsden NL has great beaches. Our large windshield currently opens on 180 degrees of Atlantic Ocean and beach, which ain’t so bad. Here you go to sleep to the sound of surf. I’ll put a picture on here in case you don’t believe me.
Other things from this week that deserve a picture:
Puffins. We spent 5 nights in a place called Elliston, close to Bonavista. Elliston is famous for two things: puffins and root cellars. The signs there claim Elliston as the root cellar capital of the world. I won’t say much about root cellars (you can probably look it up if you want), but puffins, oh my. They abound. There is a plentitude, a surfeit, a superfluity. Gail took about 200,000 pictures of them, one of which I will attempt to post. Nor was she the only one; every day, the puffin paparazzi show up in force, looking like the hordes that chase the British Royals. All looking for puffin pictures. Weird.
And, good old Johnny Kabut, aka Giovanni Caboto, the Italian fella who landed at Bonavista in the service of England. In 1498, apparently. Don’t know too much about this guy, but they made a nice statue of him in Bonavista, so I will get his pic on here, with yours truly perched irreverently at the base of the statue. We actually came further than him to get here.
Also, a chap named Gordon, the father of Karen mentioned a couple of posts ago. Karen gave us his number so we looked him up, and, like all good Newfoundlanders, he treated us royally. Fed us cod (twice), told us stories, looked after us. Thanks Gordon. We’ll get his pic on here.
And other great stuff. Writing these things is fun; getting the pictures on here is excruciating. But we will do it.
In truth, all of Newfoundland defies description and pictures don’t really do it justice, so why don’t you all jump in your vehicles and visit the place? It costs a bundle to get here, but you won’t be disappointed. So come on. Do it now. In the meanwhile, here’s some pics. I hope.

Beach. Like Tofino. Would I lie to you?

One of 200,000. The coveted fish in the beak shot.

Gordon. Fed us cod, shared his home. Thanks Gordon.

Giovanni et moi. I came further than him.
That[s it for pics, but they really don't tell the story. Get in your conveyance and come here immediately.
